Rating : 88
Drink 2007 – 2017
Cost : $ 27 - $ 29

The dark ruby-tinged 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape reveals aromas of plums, cassis, and cherries presented in a medium-bodied, spicy style with beautifully pure fruit, a savory mouthfeel, moderate but ripe, sweet tannin, and a long finish. It should drink nicely for a decade or more. Over recent vintages, I have immensely enjoyed the wines from this estate.

2005 Domaine Berthet-Rayne Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Cadiac
A Poprietary Blend Dry  Red Table wine from Chateauneuf du Pape, Southern Rhone, Rhone, France

Rating : 90
Drink 2010 – 2020
Cost : $ 45 - $ 48

An outstanding effort, the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Cadiac boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with notes of pain grille, black cherries, black currants, graphite, smoke, Provencal herbs, and pepper. Deep and rich, it is somewhat reminiscent of Chateau La Nerthe’s Chateauneuf du Pape. Anticipated maturity : 2010-2020. Over recent vintages, I have immensely enjoyed the wines from this estate.

Dom Berthet-Rayne 2006 Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc 17 Drink 2008-11
Very pale. Lightly honeyed nose. Lots of mass and weight yet quite enough refreshment. No evidence of oak and masses of alcohol. Substantial wine that seems to have the guts to develop well.

Dom Berthet-Rayne 2006 Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge 18 Drink 2013-25
Blackish crimson. Really interesting nose of coffee, even menthol. Unlike so many of these regular or tradition bottlings, this smells like a Cuvée Speciale. Lots of effort, intensity and complexity to draw you in to the glass. Plump on the mid palate with fruit completely dominating the fine tannins.

Dom Berthet-Rayne Fût de Chêne 2006 Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge 16.5 Drink 2016-26
Very dark purple. Heady, rich for hedonists. Quite a bit of Mourvedre? (Just Grenache and Mourvedre apparently.) A bit heavy and plodding though not shortage of mass. Certainly weighty though I’d like a little more liftoff. I find the regular bottling much, much more refreshing and lively. This is barrique aged.
